Thomas Beale e il tesoro nascosto da 60 milioni di dollari

 
 
Chi trova un tesoro trova un amico: Thomas Beale, l’uomo che agli inizi del XIX secolo seppellì una fortuna nelle colline della Virginia, negli Stati Uniti d’America, un capitale superiore a 60 milioni di dollari, tutt’oggi in attesa d’esser scovato e questo perché il punto esatto dov’è nascosto, è celato in un codice cifrato che nessuno è stato in grado di decodificare. Un intricato enigma che a distanza di 200 anni continua a tener impegnati ricercatori, criptoanalisti, matematici e migliaia di avventurieri più o meno improvvisati che nel tempo hanno anche tentato strade alternative, pur di riuscir a metter le mani sul patrimonio e così fecero anche i fratelli Clayton e George Hart.

Era il 1898, quando armati di buone speranze, si recarono da un medium affinché li aiutasse a trovare il tesoro. Nella penombra dello studio, questi prese a concentrarsi sulla sfera di cristallo e pochi istanti dopo, cominciò a parlare di una camera posta al piano superiore di una taverna situata nella Contea di Bedford, in Virginia. Al suo interno, avvolto nel buio affermava di scorgere un uomo, solo, con due bisacce appoggiate sul letto ed in silenzio proseguì ad osservarne i movimenti attraverso il piccolo globo. Gli Hart guardavano invece lui con trepidazione, specialmente Clayton e d’un tratto l’ansia di sapere si trasformò in brama di raggiunger al più presto l’obiettivo. All’improvviso il sensitivo ebbe un sussulto e a gran voce esclamò d’aver visto quel tizio aprir le sacche, riuscendo a distinguerne chiaramente il contenuto: gioielli, diamanti, smeraldi, rubini ed erano talmente tanti da sprigionar un bagliore che aveva illuminato tutta la stanza.

Si disse quindi certo di poterne seguire ogni spostamento e alla fine arrivò il momento in cui riferì ai due fratelli il luogo dov’erano stati sotterrati i beni, ovvero nei pressi di Goose Creek. Tutti e tre arrivarono sul posto all’imbrunire e mentre il veggente si adagiò sopra un letto di foglie abbandonandosi al sonno, George e Clayton si misero a scavare e andarono avanti per tutta la notte con il solo aiuto di una lanterna. Al sopraggiungere dell’alba, quando ormai l’ottimismo stava svanendo insieme alla luna, un tonfo sordo sotto il colpo di una vangata riaccese l’entusiasmo e presero a cavar terra freneticamente, ma sfortunatamente per loro, non emerse altro che una grossa roccia. Pensando che potesse esser l’ultimo ostacolo per la felicità, la estrassero, tuttavia constatando ch’era custode del nulla e dunque svegliarono il medium, questi si lasciò cadere in trance e un volta tornato in sé, disse loro che avevano sbagliato di alcuni metri. Erano però esausti, troppo stanchi per affrontar nuovamente una simile fatica e decisero quindi di andarsene, per tornare una settimana dopo con tanto di dinamite e quello che ottennero fu solo una pioggia di sassi e zolle.

Conclusero che l’unico sistema per entrare in possesso del tesoro era decifrare il codice, come anche loro avevano inutilmente provato a lungo, ben prima di quell’ultimo disperato esperimento medianico. Fu lo stesso George Hart a riportare la vicenda aggiungendola come dettaglio a molte altre informazioni in un documento scritto e datato 1964, «nel tentativo di fornire nuove conoscenze a quanto già noto» circa la sepoltura di oro, argento, e gioielli da parte di Thomas Jefferson Beale e compagni.

 

Thomas Beale e la miniera d’oro

Tutto ebbe inizio nel 1817, quando Beale, seguito da un manipolo di 30 uomini, lasciarono la Virginia per dirigersi verso le terre settentrionali del New Mexico, dove poi avrebbero cacciato bisonti. Nella primavera dell’anno successivo, mentre percorrevano le Rocky Mountains s’imbatterono però in una copiosa vena d’oro e senza neanche pensarci abbandonarono l’idea che li aveva portati nell’ovest e si tuffarono nella miniera. In pochi mesi estrassero una tale quantità di prezioso metallo che iniziarono a temer per la propria incolumità e decisero quindi di trasportare quanto accumulato altrove, lontano da quelle zone selvagge e piene d’insidie.

Guardarono alla ‘Madre degli Stati’ da dov’erano giunti e in due spedizioni, nel 1819 e poi nel 1921, fra i boschi delle Blue Ridge Mountains, interrarono qualcosa come 1.324kg d’oro e 2.300 di argento, oltre a molti gioielli acquistati per alleggerire il carico durante i viaggi. Li deposero all’interno di vasi in ferro a circa 2 metri di profondità e quando venne il momento di far ritorno al giacimento, Thomas Beale escogitò un elaborato sistema che avrebbe dovuto permettere il ritrovamento qualora lui e suoi uomini fossero incappati in circostanze negative o peggio, se morte li avesse colti.

Creò 3 schemi, nel primo indicò l’ubicazione del tesoro, nel secondo ne descrisse l’entità e nell’ultimo elencò i nomi dei compagni e dei loro parenti più stretti, in modo tale che i sopravvissuti o quantomeno le famiglie avrebbero potuto beneficiare delle ricchezze. Non gli restava che trovar un persona fidata a cui lasciar il segreto e la individuò nell’amico Robert Morris, un oste di Lynchburg verso cui aveva massima stima e da lui si recò consegnandoli una cassetta. Si raccomandò perché la conservasse con cura e soprattutto gli impose di non aprirla, consentendogli però di farlo se trascorsi due lustri non avesse più avuto alcuna notizia ed infine, fece promessa di mandargli nel frattempo la chiave di lettura per decifrare i codici tramite posta.

Gli anni passarono e nessuno si presentò reclamando il piccolo scrigno, ma neppure la missiva con le istruzioni per risolvere il rebus fu mai recapitata e quando Morris divenne finalmente padrone di aprir la custodia, vi trovò incomprensibili fogli e due lettere a lui indirizzate in cui Beale gli esponeva la storia della scoperta dell’oro e lo invitava a dividere il tesoro in 31 parti uguali, trattenendone una per se stesso e dando le restanti ai suoi compagni o alle persone a loro più vicine.

Nel 1862, dopo aver collezionato un’infinita serie d’insuccessi, Morris raccontò tutto quanto quanto ad un amico rimasto per sempre nell’ombra. Questi riuscì però ad interpretare il 2° schema, comprese difatti che Thomas Beale aveva celato il messaggio dietro la Dichiarazione d’Indipendenza e poté riportare il seguente messaggio: “Ho depositato nella contea di Bedford, a circa quattro miglia da Buford’s, in una fossa, o cripta, sei piedi sotto la superficie del terreno, i seguenti articoli, appartenenti nel loro insieme alle parti i cui nomi sono forniti nell’allegato 3:
Il primo deposito è consistito in mille e quattordici libbre d’oro, e in tremilaottocentododici libbre d’argento, depositate nel novembre 1819. Il secondo è stato effettuato nel dicembre 1821, ed è consistito in millenovecentosette libbre d’oro, e milleduecentottantotto libbre d’argento; nonché in gioielli acquistati a St. Louis in cambio dell’argento per economia di trasporto, valutati 13.000 dollari.
Quanto sopra è conservato in modo sicuro in recipienti di ferro, con coperchi di ferro. La cripta è rozzamente rivestita di pietre, mentre i recipienti poggiano su solide pietre, e sono coperti da altre. Il foglio numero 1 descrive l’ubicazione esatta della cripta, cosicché trovarla non comporterà nessuna difficoltà.”

Il testo però non gli servì per tradurre in parole anche i numeri degli altri fogli e la ricerca divenne un’ossessione. Continuò a indagare per oltre vent’anni, finché nel 1885, ormai distrutto e ridotto in miseria per aver concentrato ogni sforzo sui codici, rivelò al mondo l’intera vicenda pubblicando un opuscolo dal titolo The Beale Papers.

Lo stampò in forma anonima per evitare eventuali ripercussioni e incaricò tale James Ward di occuparsene in qualità di suo agente. Quest’ultimo sarebbe dunque entrato in scena solo allora, ma la casa di Morris risulta esser stata di proprietà di un uomo con medesimo nome e cognome, per cui è plausibile credere che fosse proprio lui lo sconosciuto amico dell’oste e decrittatore, tanto più che dalla Biblioteca del Congresso ottenne il diritto d’autore sul libretto.

 

James Ward e il legame con la massoneria

Con la speranza di ripeter quanto fatto con la Dichiarazione d’Indipendenza, nel corso del tempo sono stati analizzati testi letterari, passi biblici e nella seconda metà degli ’60, il dr. Carl Hammer formò anche un gruppo di accademici al fine di congiungere risorse e conoscenze. Fondarono la Beale Cypher Association ed organizzarono seminari, simposi, elaborarono teorie e pubblicando numerosi articoli, ma non riuscirono a svelare l’arcano e i membri sciolsero definitivamente l’associazione nel 1996, conservando privatamente i dossier.

Ovviamente non sono mai mancati i diffidenti, fra i primi a sostener che il tesoro non ci sia mai stato fu il dr. Clarence Williams, ricercatore della Biblioteca del Congresso che già nel ’34 mise in evidenza la mancanza di prove che potessero dare attendibilità ai Beale Papers ed effettivamente, non vi sono neanche documenti che certifichino l’esistenza di un Thomas Beale nella Virginia dell’epoca. La maggior parte degli scettici infatti, attribuisce l’imbroglio a James Ward e non pochi hanno letto nell’artificio il suo legame con la massoneria. I registri della Dove Lodge No. 51 testimoniano che ne entrò a far parte nel 1862 e questo ha portato i ricercatori a trovar molte similitudini con i rituali e la simbologia dei ‘liberi muratori’. I 3 messaggi in codice potrebbero quindi rappresentare quelli che originariamente erano i soli 3 gradi della gerarchia, ovvero Apprendista, Compagno e Maestro ed a questo si aggiungerebbero alcune coincidenze fra le date riportate nel resoconto di Beale e le attività del Gran Concilio di Rito Criptico, fondato nella capitale virginiana lo stesso mese e lo stesso anno in cui lui e suoi uomini giunsero nel New Mexico.

Anche dei passaggi riportati nello schema trascritto hanno indotto vari studiosi ad abbracciare la teoria massonica, in particolare quando viene detto che il tesoro si trova «in una fossa, o cripta, sei piedi sotto la superficie del terreno», una formulazione che evocherebbe la ricerca della Parola Perduta e di questo avviso anche Joe Nickell, famoso scettico e investigatore americano che attraverso le pagine del libro Misteriosi Reami: Sondare gli Enigmi Paranormali, Storici e Forensi pubblicato nel 1992, senza esitazioni affermava che «Beale e il suo tesoro sono illusioni e fanno parte di un’allegoria intesa a richiamare l’anticipata “scoperta della volta segreta massonica e dei tesori inestimabili, con la parola perduta” (come espresso nel grado dell’Arco Reale) . Il contrasto tra la futile ricerca dell’oro e quella per una maggiore ricchezza spirituale sono espressi didatticamente nell’allegoria».

Tali supposizioni non costituiscono però solide basi per dichiarare che i Beale Papers siano un falso, tanto più che alla fine degli anni ’60, il dr. Hammer analizzò per mezzo di computer i criptogrammi non decodificati e sebbene non riuscì a risolverli, osservò che i numeri seguivano un sistema ciclico, quindi una logica e inoltre, notò che il 1° presentava la stessa metodologia del 2°. Finché i due schemi continueranno ad essere avvolti nel mistero, rimarranno quindi molti interrogativi e il tesoro, oppure il colossale inganno, continueranno a tener acceso il dibattito, attrarre centinaia di fidenti e increduli esperti, ricercatori, matematici ed altrettanti esploratori con la febbre dell’oro.

Una volta che il tesoro di Beale entra dentro di te, è difficile liberarsene. Si corre il rischio d’esser posseduti. Come una droga, il gioco d’azzardo, riesce a portare le persone più vulnerabili a investire tutto su un sogno.
